The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) Review

The Japanese movie poster for The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (Wild Speed 3).

DJ Benvenuto the Raccoon II (With the Funny Hat) has this to say:

A lot of updates lately.

Sure, there haven't been any videos or "specials" in those updates, but we're trying.

NARC is so close to being complete I can taste it. It'll still be a few more weeks probably. But it's mostly editing, special effects and audio editing at this point.

Speaking of "movies" though, I'd like to talk about The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

I'll keep it short. I loved it.

This is the first of the Fast & Furious movies that I actually liked. The first one was nothing special and the second one was just plain lousy. This one is a pretty big departure from the previous two and I think we have Justin Lin to thank for that.

Obviously, the whole drifting and Japan thing is something that gives the movie a pretty different direction, but what saves it from being another forgettable Fast & Furious sequel is Justin Lin's directing.

I'm sure you all know this by now, but Justin Lin directed Better Luck Tomorrow, a movie I liked a great deal. So when I heard and eventually saw that he put in a character from that movie into this one I was thrilled. I think it was pretty well done, completely unintrusive and a nice treat for fans of Better Luck Tomorrow.

Another treat for me was Zachery Ty Bryan's role in the movie. For those of you who don't remember the name, he's the blonde son from Home Improvement. He's one of the first characters you meet, too. Him simply being in the movie made me laugh so that's a point in the movie's favor.

Another great casting choice was Sonny Chiba as the yakuza boss. Great. It's the man, Sonny Chiba. THE STREET FIGHTER. THE KARATE BULLFIGHTER. He has a somewhat small role, but it was still pretty cool to see him there.

Now we arrive at the small cameos. Anybody that has seen the Initial D movie probably remembers Keichi Tsuchiya or the real life Drift King. Keep an eye out for him when Sean, the main character is training and there are some Japanese guys watching him.

Of course, who can forget Vin Diesel's cameo. It might have been a little more "powerful" (and I use that word loosely) if they hadn't had put it in the teaser commercials, but it wasn't horrible. It was there and the people in the theater seemed to love it and you got to give the masses what they love.

Lucas Black's acting isn't good, but it doesn't really matter. This movie is too intense for you to worry about things like acting and plot. WHO NEEDS THEM?

The music blares non-stop and the cars are always ready to race. The Initial D movie was alright but compared to The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, I have to say I'm unimpressed. Maybe if the Initial D movie would've had Eurobeat music then I would have liked it a little more, but it doesn't matter. I'm comparing and I don't really like doing that. Besides, Avex released the Eurobeat version of the Initial D movie already, so it's out there waiting for me to watch it.

Anyway, I'm off topic.

Justin Lin delivered. He gave the masses what they want and he gave people like me a little something extra. The drift king, Han, Sonny Chiba, Zachary Ty Bryan and more.

It's like three sequels in one. Fast & Furious 3 obviously, Better Luck Tomorrow 2, and Home Improvement: Brad 7 Years Later.

Make sure to watch the movie sideways for the full experience. It'll be like you're in the middle of a drift.

I said I'd keep the review short but it turned out long.

Don't worry though. I have more to say today.
