Creating a Monster
Image Manipulation How-To

This is a depiction of DJ Benvenuto the Raccoon II (With the Funny Hat) after having transformed into a monster during The War Against Dracula & His Army of Monsters.

The Process

To create this monster I began with an image of DJ Benvenuto the Raccoon II (With the Funny Hat). I scanned it at 666 dpi and then used Adobe Photoshop to edit it.

After scanning, I proceeded to remove the background from the image. I used the liquify tool to enlarge his eye and narrow the pupil. I elongated his mouth into a beak. I also used the liquify tool too elongate some portions of his clothing and shrink the ear.

After using the liquify tool, I cleaned up the image a little and proceeded to directly select his “beak” and new bird-eye. I adjusted the brightness and contrast in order to make the mouth and pupil appear blacker than they were originally. Then I adjusted hue and saturation to make his beak and eye appear yellow.

I then repeated the same steps to change the rest of his skin color to green and his shirt to blue. After this I cleaned up the image a little more by smoothing some edges and eliminating certain areas I wasn’t pleased with.

I then decided to use the paint brush tool to create a highlight from his hair around his beak and arm. After this, I applied a combination and repetition of various filters like rough pastels, sponge, and smudge stick in order to create texture and consistency on his body.

Finally, I used the paint brush tool, stamp tool and eraser to clean up.
