“Dougherty Ace of Spades” was created by Larry Rivers in 1960. It was exhibited in the Museum of Art in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I viewed it on display in February of 2004.

It was created utilizing oil on canvas. The piece itself is a distorted representation of an entire playing card. It is about 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall. The focus of the piece is the black spade centered on the canvas.

There are traces of blue and yellow coloring on the piece, but the majority of it was created in shades of black, white and grey. There are some smudge-like patches of black scattered around the piece. The shades of grey make it appear as if the artist intended to make the work look as if it had been painted on top of a metallic surface.

There are letters (alphabetical) scattered throughout the piece. Their worn-out appearance makes it seem as if they fade in and out of the piece. The only complete word visible is that of “playing”, which is thinly scrawled near the top of the spade. The number “503” is also written beneath the spade within a patch of yellow coloring.

The design of this “playing card” is not symmetric, as the spade is more slanted on one side. Also, the reading of the card is shown only in the upper left corner, where in a real card it would be shown in both the upper left and lower right corners.
