The Rogue Knight
Original Fantasy Fiction
Written by The Woodsman
There was something about the way he walked through the desecrated village of Tristram.
Maybe it was that metallic clank of the knight’s armor on the stone path. Or perhaps, what the villagers feared the most were Jax’s demonic sword and shield.
Fear was present in the already ravaged Tristram, but the villagers also respected him for what he was about to do.
For all of Jax’s wrong doings he had now returned from the Dark Forest, rejuvenated and ready to slaughter King Commander’s demon army to repent.
As Jax continued on the path to the castle he was met with little resistance. The Tristram militia knew of his horrible deeds he performed for the King and of his abilities.
One of the most popular horrifying stories about Jax was that in one night's passing he murdered one hundred soldiers who spoke ill of the King.
Of course, they chose their lives rather than to partake in what would be their demise. However, the mercenaries, on the other hand, who were to attack Jax next did not flee in terror. All they cared about was the one million gold coins on Jax’s head that the evil King had promised.
The mercenaries attacked and attacked with such ferocity that Jax’s mighty blade did not cut them down all at once. The few mercenaries that survived the blow climbed over their slain comrades and began to stab, smash, and cleave Jax with swords, hammers, and axes.
These attempts at his life were futile for his armor was too thick to penetrate with mere steel weapons. Then with a god-like swiftness Jax cut down the rest of the mercenaries and the path leading to the castle was now paved with bodies.
As the castle grew larger and larger in his mask, Jax knew what waited for him beyond the castle’s massive gates. Jax knew with all his being that if he walked through those gates, no matter how great his abilities, he would die and fail his quest for redemption.
As Jax thought of another way in, demon archers began to rain fiery death upon him. It was hard for him to think of another way into the castle while dodging and blocking arrows.
It hit him; over by the archery range a portion of the castle wall had crumbled away, so Jax dashed towards the archery range to sneak in where nothing would see him.
As the demon archers continued to scan the land for any trace of Jax, Jax was quietly creeping up behind some of the archers ready to kill.
Jax cut up as many as twenty archers before they realized what was going on. When the rest of the archers realized what was happening they began to shoot at Jax while retreating deeper into the castle to alert their demon brethren.
The few archers that escaped by their leathery hides reached their demonic comrades and started to march upon Jax enclosing him in a circle of death.
Jax knew there was no escaping this. It was either kill or be killed and he chose to kill.
As the demons advanced with weapons drawn, Jax drew his own sword and began to slay the beasts one by one. Cutting, slicing, and hacking through demon flesh and bone Jax was barely winning the battle, for he had taken many hits himself.
Trying to fight off hundreds of demons while blocking arrows and spears was an impossible task for any man, but Jax had a few tricks up his sleeve.
With most of Jax’s armor broken and his shield now almost useless, Jax quickly attached his sword to himself and started to spin violently so that any demon soldier who came close enough to him would be split in two.
He loaded his repeating crossbow and commenced peppering the sky with dozens of his own arrows. When the arrows fell back to earth they were followed by squeals of pain and death.
Jax then proceeded in tossing his homemade explosives into the squealing wounded crowd of demons.
He stopped his spinning and once again the demon horde advanced upon him.
Jax’s bombs suddenly went off throwing demons in all directions while blowing a hole in the horde to the entrance of the throne room. Jax desperately ran for the door to escape the rest of the horde.
As he ran, Jax dodged attack after attack, but finally reached the throne room and barred the door. Even though he was exhausted from all the fighting he still prepared himself for an even greater challenge.
Jax slowly walked through the throne room, sword in hand checking around the concrete pillars for any surprises.
As Jax rounded the corner he saw King Commander sitting on his throne between two beastly demon guards.
Jax blitzed towards the king, bloody and battered sword raised, ready to remove his oversized head, but the king’s guards stepped in to deflect Jax’s blow. Jax jumped back and stared in awe at what he now had to kill to get to the king.

The first one was half man half lion. It wore some kind of spike armor and wielded a trident that looked like it could skewer three full-grown cows.
The other was half man half bull. It wore thick chain mail from its neck to its knees and it wielded a massive flail big enough to crush the largest of rocks.
Jax swung his monstrous blade at the bull demon, but the lion demon attacked Jax so Jax missed the bull demon to block the lion’s strike and knocked him back.
Jax continued his attack on the bull while the lion was off balance. Blow after blow was exchanged between Jax and the bull, but Jax’s stamina was wearing thin.
He knew he needed to take out one of these beasts so that he could focus completely on the other.
Jax kept dodging and blocking the bull’s flail, but the lion recovered and charged with its trident out in front.
The bull swung his flail at Jax. Jax dodged and hit the wall hard while the flail went sailing and collided with the lion’s leg hard, breaking it. The lion fell and Jax saw this as his opportunity.
He ran at the lion, sword drawn. The lion saw him coming and tried to counter but failed. Jax’s sword was now buried deep in the lion’s skull.
Jax quickly released his sword and picked up the monster’s trident to fend off the bull’s attack.
The bull demon came at Jax swinging his flail with such power that it didn’t matter what it hit. Walls and pillars came crashing down around Jax as the bull came closer and closer.
King Commander was laughing maniacally at the devastation before him, proud of his demons.
The bull, now inches from Jax, attacked with his flail. It was too close to dodge. Jax took the hit, dislocated his shoulder, spun around and threw the trident with all his strength into the chest of the bull.
It pierced its chain mail armor and flesh with a sickening thud. The bull dropped his flail, let out a scream of surprise and pain while trying to remove the trident from his chest.
Another opportunity had opened up for Jax to counter-attack. Jax removed his brain matter covered sword from the lion’s head and rushed towards the bull that was still struggling with the trident that was still deeply lodged within his chest.
It was too late for the bull to react to Jax’s charge as Jax plunged his sword through the bull’s stomach.
