DJ Hadoken Exlamparaaghis has this to say:
The Geocities RIA site will be going down in a couple of days (Oct 26, 2009). I’ve backed up all the files I could recover from it, and I’m hoping I’ll have some time tomorrow to make one last check. I feel like it should be more ceremonial, seeing how influential the Geocities site was. But, I guess when it comes down to it, data is just data. I’m going to miss the old File Manager (even though I haven’t actually used it in almost 10 years).
By the time I get around to it, it’ll be passed midnight on the 26th out here in Japan, but, if they are going by U.S. time zones, that’ll give me a few hours to just look everything over one last time.
It was a good site though, even though the GEOCITIES BUILT-IN “FEATURES” were annoying. There was a charm in making multiple Geocities accounts just to scrounge the lousy 15 mb or something that they would allow for us. Back then 15 mb was a big deal. Now we have like, 300 GB or unlimited storage space or something (I forget). But, even though we have all that space, nobody has updated, and well, neither have I. But that’s because my life has just been so crazy since I graduated college.
Thank goodness for backups though, and being able to upload all that stuff here. It was pretty scary recently when I thought I had lost everything. But, thankfully I managed to recover most of it. None of this stuff is physical, it’s all just data on hard disks, but, losing it is like, losing a part of who I am. It’s like memories you can’t get back.
Backups. Backups. Backups. And poor Geocities site, but, it needs to go down with honor, so I’m not going to make fun of it now. It served us well and was fun to ghetto-update in high school, and helped us spread the glorious word of Riaopiaism. Never forget The Day of The Great Exile. Good times.
Remember to make BACK-UPS!!!!
