Appleseed (2004)
What I Heard
Audio in Animation
Written by DJ Hadoken Exlamparaaghis
This post is about the sound effects and music that I heard in the movie Appleseed.
The sound effects consisted mainly of mechanical sounds, robotic sound effects, computer sounds and a lot of beeping as various buttons were pressed. There were not many sound effects that stood apart from the others.
In the introduction sequence, there were sounds for the robots “breathing” and the movie was riddled with guns loading and gunfire.
During some scenes, there were effects that were only used for those specific moments, such as rain falling and wind blowing. Early in the movie, there was also a distinct splashing sound as a man walked through a puddle that was not repeated again.
There were many hydraulic sounds as the different machines moved throughout the movie. During the final battle, however, there was a distinct sound of glass shattering as buildings toppled when the robots were destroyed.
Other sound effects included engines, airplanes, and propellers. With the exceptions of the water splashing and glass shattering, most of the sound effects blended with one another, no other sounds stood distinctly apart from the rest.
The soundtrack was mainly scored, but also featured some electronica and rock.
The movie opens with an electronica song and progresses into a rock song as the action increases. During one of the first fight scenes, a rock song plays accompanied by vocals. After the opening, the soundtrack changes to scored music, with heavy bass during the more ominous scenes featuring the antagonists of the movie.
During the first half of the movie, there is a lot of traveling with conversations taking place. Lighter music is played during these sequences; it is upbeat with a metropolitan feel. The soundtrack alternates between this upbeat music and deeper orchestral music for most of the movie.
Throughout the movie, the volume lowers during conversations. At one point, during one of the early scenes, both the music and sound effects cease completely.
Towards the end of the movie, the soundtrack changes to low humming sounds, and trumpets play as one of the central characters dies. After this character comes back to life, more uplifting orchestral music is played and the final battle begins.
During the very last, most suspenseful moment of the movie, drums play and then all goes silent after the moment is over. The orchestral music then picks up again with a mellow feel. It then changes into violins and happier music, and then moves into the credits with electronica and vocals.
