My Life in a land of robots

A photo of a round traffic mirror in Japan, with a blue sky in the background, and the reflection of a person standing in front of some bushes and a house, who is holding a camera up to take a picture of the traffic mirror.

My Life in a land of robots
A Japan Adventure

Created by DJ Hadoken

From September of 2002 to May of 2003, RIA hit Japan and hit it hard.
This is an album DJ Hadoken made for all those curious minds as he studied in Japan.

A photo of a rural town in Japan with a blue sky in the background and a round traffic mirror in the foreground.
Walking the dog.

A photo of a tall silver utility pole in rural Japan with a clear blue sky in the background.
Sit and think and breathe as the void passes.

A photo of a pair of sakura cherry blossom trees on top of a wooded hill in rural Japan with some grave markers in front of them.
The sakura blooms.

A photo of a long driveway in rural Japan that has been carved through a hilltop that leads up to a house with a Honda CR-V parked next to it.
Read the void.

A photo of the fenced corner on a bridge on a road in rural Japan with a construction sign place in front of it.
This is a dream that the world is in.

A photo of a leashed small female mixed beagle dog that is standing at attention on a gravel path in a wooded area in rural Japan.
This world I cannot imagine as I stand in it.

A photo taken by a guardrail on a bridge overlooking some expressway toll buildings situated in a wooded valley in rural Japan.
It kept blazing for them.

A photo of a cluttered desk that is covered in text books that also has a blue radio and a soda bottle on it, by a curtained window inside of a room in rural Japan.
I sit and think alone.

A photo of some wooded scenery in rural Japan with a blue sky in the background and a round traffic mirror in the foreground.
Fighting to conquer the minute details.

A photo of a boy in a funny pose with a man in the background sitting at a kotatsu and watching television inside of a living room in a house in rural Japan.
The jester laughs.

A photo taken through a chain-link fence atop the middle of a bridge overlooking a grassy median that has some litter on it, on a roadway in rural Japan.

In this picture there is one center
In that one center there is paper
It has been resting for days
Even now it rests
For no one will come to take it
Put it in its proper place
if there is such a place for a paper of its kind
bearing news of this void
this void that within
within this void it was born
born from the one who put it there one night
in the form of an aerial machine
late into the night this one rode
rode on his lonely bike
this lonely night
flew the paper to rest
to rest among the grass
no one else to suspect

what transpired that night

A photo of a serious-looking young man that is sitting in a chair, wearing a green hat backwards, has headphones on his neck, is wearing a jacket and has his arms crossed, inside of a room in rural Japan.
100 yen sunglasses in Spring.

With that out of the way, let’s move on to the less metaphorical stuff.

A photo of several music CD albums of various genres that were purchased from a second hand shop in rural Japan.
Here are a bunch of CD’s I’ve bought.

I found a cool store that sells eurobeat for 900 yen,
compared to the 3,000 yen at most stores.
That’s about $9 compared to $30...

A photo of a smiling young man that is sitting in a chair, with medium length hair that is parted in the middle, who is wearing a jacket and has his arms crossed, inside of a room in rural Japan.
Yes my hair.

It can give me so many different looks.
One of which is a very lamesterish tone...

A photo of a serious-looking young man, with medium length hair that is parted in the middle, who is kneeling on one leg as he poses inside of a room in rural Japan.
Me posing. Don’t ask why.

My host family’s kid likes to make me pose for pictures.
He also likes it when I wear sunglasses...
No I don’t understand.

A photo of the side of a young man’s head who has medium length hair that has been parted down the middle, inside of a room in rural Japan.
Yet again my hair.

This time a side view.

A photo of a boy who is sitting backwards in a chair in front of a cluttered table that has a notebook PC, a blue clock radio, a CD player, and some books on it, inside of a room in rural Japan.
Little Shorty.

The most damn coolest lamester on the planet.

A photo of the top cover of a notebook PC that is covered in many stickers that include Daiei Hawks baseball stickers, some animal stickers, and Purikura stickers, that is on top of a wooden desk inside of a room in rural Japan.
This is a big picture.

I’ve been collecting stickers and putting them on my laptop (a.k.a. Ultimo Jr.),
since someone told me to, way back before I came here.
So I have been.
Print Club (“Purikura”) pictures are on it...
Print Club is those pictures where you see me mackin’ it with
Japanese girls that I don’t even know their names.
Heh.

A photo of a smiling young man that is sitting in a chair, with medium length hair that is parted in the middle, who is wearing a jacket and is giving a thumbs up with both of his hands, inside of a room in rural Japan.
Hair picture.

Another thing that’s great about my hair right now is
that not only will it give me the most badass looking mohawk when I come back,
it can also make me look flamboyantly lame.

A photo of a tall young man with blonde hair who is smiling and giving a peace sign, next to a shorter young man with black hair who is smiling and giving a thumbs up, inside of a house in rural Japan.
UnfamiliarDude and Mr. Slick.

Mr. Slick is one of the most bizarre human beings I have come across.
We get along very well.

A photo of some adults gathered on a stage singing at a recital at a kindergarten in rural Japan.
At Little Shorty’s “Happiokai”.

It’s basically...
a big event where the kindergarteners perform in plays and
play music and many other things.
In this picture, the parents were singing a song.
My host father is in it, too.

A photo of some children gathered on a stage singing at a recital at a kindergarten in rural Japan.
Again the Happiokai.

“My Grandfather’s Clock” is a very popular song here...

A photo of an elderly couple sitting at a kotatsu with a young boy who is standing next to them in a living room inside of a house in rural Japan.
Speaking of grandfathers...

Here are my Japanese host grandparents.

A photo taken from inside of a car looking up at a large blue billboard that has yellow letters that read "HARD-OFF" in front of a store in a city in rural Japan.
I was very happy when I saw this sign.

Yes.
Very happy.
In many ways...
heh... heh...
*shoves hand into pocket.

A photo of a group of five people standing by a wooden bench that is on a hill that is overlooking Kagoshima city with Sakurajima partially visible in the background through some clouds and fog.
A South Korean exchange student came to stay with us for three days a while back.

It was really fun.
I felt a lot more like part of the family when she was around.
Because for a while I was not “the guest”.

A photo of a smiling young woman and a boy who is holding up candy and soda, with a stuffed toy, inside of a car that is driving in a city in rural Japan.
Her Japanese was almost at the same level as me at that time.

It was her first time in Japan and she was saying things in Japanese
that I had just learned after months of living here.
The American Japanese language learning system sucks big time.
Nevertheless, it was fun having her around.
I wasn’t so lonely.

A photo of a boy who is wearing a school uniform and holding a large yellow baseball cap in a living room inside of a house in rural Japan.
Little Shorty is going to be a first grader in elementary school really soon.

A photo of a black t-shirt that has a skull and crossbones with some amusing unnatural English written in mostly white letters below it, inside of a room in a house in rural Japan.
A shirt I went crazy looking for.

I eventually managed to get ahold of it when
I asked the store clerks about it and they told me the only one left was
the one on the mannequin and so they asked if I wanted that one
and I said ok and bought it for my friend named J.

As you can see, my creative powers have been exhausted.
It is nearly 1 am and my neck is killing me. So thus, here ends my little picture show.
I think I deserve to be allowed to not end this one with something creative.

So suck it.

I need a massage.

...And now I just finished reconverting just about everything in the Features section.

It’s midnight.

I’m tired.

I still need that massage.
